Alex Samoylovich

is the founding partner, Chief Executive Officer, and Chief Financial Officer of CEDARst Companies.  Over the past ten years, Mr. Samoylovich has sourced, invested in and managed in excess of hundreds of transactions and has been instrumental in the acquisition and disposition of real estate with a value in excess of $500mm.

Utilizing a “fully integrated real estate developer” (IRED) approach, Mr. Samoylovich and his partners have seamlessly interwoven acquisition, construction, finance, management, and marketing under one company. In the past 5 years, CEDARst is considered one of the most active acquirers of distressed assets in the greater Chicago area.

Under Mr. Samoylovich’s leadership, the company has carved out a niche strategy for the adaptive reuse of underperforming assets through bankruptcies, foreclosure, note purchases, and other distressed situations in the Chicago area; covering a span of product types from multifamily, office, mixed-use, and hospitality. Mr. Samoylovich has cemented a well-earned reputation as a tenacious deal maker capable of closing the most complex and demanding real estate transactions and returning superior risk adjusted returns to his investors.

Prior to entering real estate, Mr. Samoylovich was an accomplished equity and options trader. During this time, Mr. Samoylovich developed a keen understanding of market psychology and timing which he forayed into a successful “short” strategy in residential real estate just prior to the recession. Mr. Samoylovich holds a BA in Business from DePaul University and is currently a member of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO) and the Economic Club of Chicago (ECC). In 2016, Alex was nominated to Crain’s 40 Under 40.

On Friday, January 8, 2016, CEDARst lost our dear friend and colleague, Jay Michael. Jay was a visionary in the truest sense of the word; he only saw possibility and he was steadfast in bringing his ideas to life. Jay led by example, fighting feverishly each and every day for all of the things in this world that he wanted to improve. As the co-founder of CEDARst, he was constantly bucking real estate and design conventions, religiously following his intuition as he developed new and better ways to live. After all, Jay wasn’t merely developing real estate, he was creating spaces that fostered community and platforms for creative spirits to thrive.

Jay was a founding partner and Chief Marketing & Innovation Officer at CEDARst Companies. With his first major publication at 23-years-old, Jay had widespread recognition for interior design excellence. Jay had employed these skills in redeveloping over 1,000,000 square feet of space over the past 10 years. Utilizing an “integrated real estate developer” (IRED) approach, Jay and his partners have seamlessly interwoven acquisition, design/architecture, construction, finance, management, and marketing under one company.

In the past 5 years, CEDARst has been one of the most active developers of distressed assets in the Chicago market. With Jay’s leadership, the Company continues to receive national notoriety with media and brand outlets such as Bloomberg, Bravo TV, CB2, Bloomingdales Home, Crain’s Business, Chicago Sun-Times, Better Homes & Gardens, and Renovation Style.

Prior to entering real estate, Jay worked for CNBC Europe’s London Headquarters where he was trained in contract negotiation and sales within their network and distribution department. During this time, Jay developed a strong understanding of sales and marketing within a global marketplace. Jay held an English and American degrees from Richmond, The American International University of London, and was involved in several philanthropic organizations throughout Chicago such as The Presidents Counsel for The Museum of Science and Industry.

WILL MURPHY

is a partner with CEDARst Companies and the Managing Director of Acquisitions and Finance. Responsibilities include originating, underwriting and closing commercial real estate transactions. He assists in asset management, investor relations, and procurement of capital.

Will has over 10 years of commercial real estate experience in acquisitions, investments, and finance. Prior to joining CEDARst, Will was an Associate Director within the Real Estate Capital Markets Group of Barclays Capital, the investment banking division of Barclays Bank headquartered in London, England. Most recently, Will was a Senior Vice President at Cole Taylor Bank, a regional bank headquartered in Chicago, IL. Will has been involved in the acquisition and finance of over $500 million in commercial real estate transactions across all major domestic markets and asset classes.

Will holds a Bachelor of Business Administration with a double major in Finance and Real Estate & Urban Land Economics from University of Wisconsin- Madison. He is currently a member of the Chicago Real Estate Counsel (CREC) and Young Real Estate Professionals of Chicago (YREP). He resides in Lincoln Park with his wife Alexandra.

is a partner with CEDARst Companies and is responsible for coordinating and supervising design, construction and development operations. Mark stays fully involved in the day-to-day design and construction activities, while focusing on progressively growing the company’s operation. Mark has been active in the office, commercial, retail, industrial and residential real estate industry for 15 years. He has personally been responsible for projects in excess of $200 million. Prior to CEDARst, Mark held a position as Vice President at Summit Design + Build.

Specializing in urban infill, new construction and historical preservation, Mark provides a new life to all projects and urban developments. By carefully balancing the intimate details of concept, space, constructability and financial feasibility, Mark and his team have successfully completed a variety of multi-family, commercial, and historical preservation projects while executing at the highest level.

Mark is a LEED Accredited Professional and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering and a Certificate of Business from University of Wisconsin- Madison.

is the Managing Director at CEDARst Companies. He brings more than eight years of commercial real estate experience in acquisitions, investments, and finance. Prior to joining CEDARst, Larson was a junior associate at Prudential Mortgage Capital Company. Most recently, Larson was vice president at Cole Taylor Bank, a regional bank headquartered in Chicago. Larson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and a Master of Business Administration from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management with concentrations in Real Estate, Finance and Entrepreneurship.

is Associate In-House General Counsel at CEDARst. His responsibilities include facilitation of in-house legal affairs as well as communication with all corporate counsel. Prior to joining CEDARst, Cwick acted as a sole practitioner handling civil litigation matters primarily in Cook County. Tim holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Clemson University and has his Juris Doctorate from The Charleston School of Law.

is the Creative and Marketing Director of CEDARst. Heather, a professionally trained photographer, employs her creative ability with the architectural and construction teams to space plan and design the distressed assets that CEDARst acquires. Through consistent attention to detail (in all phases of production and presentation) Heather also leads and manages the marketing efforts with the creative team for all of CEDARst Company brands.  

Heather holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Photography from the Maryland Institute College of Art- Baltimore.

ANDREW JOHNSON

ANDREW JOHNSON

is the Design Director at CEDARst Companies where he oversees the graphic design team’s work in both the print and digital space. This work serves CEDARst’s groundbreaking marketing strategy, as determined in collaboration with the Creative & Marketing Director.

Andrew specializes in branding, marketing, graphic design, layout, illustration, and UI/UX. He is also the Editor-in-Chief and Creative Director for the FLATS® in-house publication, NORTH Magazine.

Andrew holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art & Visual Culture from Bates College.

joins CEDARst as the Director of Accounting. Before joining CEDARst, Kenny was a public accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers and spent a decade in the private sector working for several real estate firms, both industrial and commercial. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a double-major in Accounting and Finance and is a certified public accountant in the state of Illinois. He also is a proud recipient of the coveted Illinois CPA Society Excel Award.

joined CEDARst in 2012 right after moving from Houston, TX. She started as a staff accountant and has grown with the company. She is currently the Controller for CEDARst, and with 10 years of Real Estate/Accounting experience it is clear that this is what she loves doing. Erika is a proud mom of two, who moved to suburbs 3 years ago and claims is one of the best decisions she has made.

is the Director of Residential Leasing at FLATS®. Daly began with CEDARst 9 years ago as an Office Manager while finishing her undergraduate at DePaul University and has continued to grow with the company. Currently a licensed Managing Broker, Daly oversees the leasing and stabilization efforts for the residential properties within the CEDARst portfolio, specifically properties in the FLATS® & ESTATE portfolios.

Daly supports and volunteers with several charitable organizations including Catholic Charities and Refugee One, where she serves on the planning committee for the annual fundraising gala.

ADAM TRZYNKA

MANAGING DIRECTOR OF PROPERTY MANAGEMENT

ADAM TRZYNKA

is Managing Director of Property Management at CEDARst Companies and FLATS®. His focus is to continue to grow the FLATS® brand with the summer 2016 opening of Lawrence House while creating a fully integrated property management department within CEDARst and FLATS®. Prior to joining CEDARst, Adam was Director of Operations for Local by Laramar Chicago where he created an urban small buildings operations platform and launched the Local by Laramar brand. Before joining Laramar, Adam was Senior Vice President of Multi- Family and Student Housing with Foresite Realty Partners.

When he isn’t spending his time being innovative in the multi-family industry, Adam channels his creative energies in the kitchen cooking and baking always trying some new flavor or recipe. Wine is a passion for Adam having spent the past two birthdays in the Oregon Willamette Valley and Sonoma wine country expending his tastes and growing his collection.
